Gross Domestic Product (GDP)

The total market value of all final goods and services produced in a country in a given year; equals total consumer, investment  and government spending, plus the value of exports minus the value of imports.

Gross National Product (GNP)

GDP plus the income accruing to domestic residents as a result of investments abroad, minus the income earned in domestic markets accruing to foreigners abroad.

capitalization

The sum of a corporation´s long-term debt, stock and retained earnings. also called invested capital. Also, the market price of an entire company, calculated by multiplying the number of shares outstanding by the price per share. here also called market cap or market capitalization.

ebitda

Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization. An approximate measure of a company’s operating cash flow based on data from the company’s income statement. Calculated by looking at earnings before the deduction of interest expenses, taxes, depreciation, and amortization.

Price/Earnings ratio (P/E ratio)

The most common measure of how expensive a stock is. Equal to a stock´s capitalization divided by its after-tax earnings over a 12-month period, usually the trailing period but occasionally the current or forward period. The value is the same whether the calculation is done for the whole company or on a per-share basis. Equivalently, the cost an investor in a given stock must pay per dollar of current annual earnings. also called earnings multiple. see also ratio, price to book ratio.

quick ratio

A measure of a company’s liquidity, used to evaluate creditworthiness. Equals quick assets divided by current liabilities. also called acid-test ratio.

current ratio

Current assets divided by current liabilities. An indication of a company´s ability to meet short-term debt obligations; the higher the ratio, the more liquid the company is.
